Here come battery powered
cars.
With the U.S. auto industry in a tailspin and energy conservation
becoming more important each day, many are looking for alternative
energy sources to power our transportation. One potential solution
could be cars that run solely on battery power, as opposed to the
standard vehicle which uses fossil fuels.
One major auto company is jumping to commit to producing all-electric
vehicles by 2010. Ford announced
that it will begin developing an
all-electric van for fleet use, followed by a sedan while in
Washington, D.C. lobbying for a low-interest loan from the federal
government. The idea shared by many American auto makers is that the
first to create a cost-effective and high-performing all-electric car
will win thousands of new customers.

Tesla,
which has been building electric cars for sometime, is one of the more
well-known competitors in the field. However, one of the greatest
stumbling blocks for the small California auto manufacturer is the
required price for their cars. Easily reaching into the hundreds of
thousands, Teslas are not a luxury many can afford, though the
technology used by them does deliver a clean, smooth and effective ride.
This forward-thinking article
from 2007 tells the story of one man who
wanted to change the American auto system before it came to the brink
of collapsing in 2008. Shai Agassi likens the future of electric cars
to that of cell-phones: you need not just the technology, but also the
infrastructure – in this case charging stations to keep
all-battery powered cars running. “If Tesla is the
iPhone,” he explained, “we are
AT&T.”
Agassi found success in San Francisco in November 2008 when the city
decided to work with him on a contract to build charging stations in
the
city.
Others are much more skeptical of the potential for the success of the
electric battery powered cars, much like they were about plug-in hybrid electric
vehicles
(phevs) only a few years ago.. Some potential hang-ups could be: a lack
of a strong cross-country infrastructure, which would leave eco-drivers
stranded when the battery dies; the expense of the battery needed; the
development of the needed batteries; and the performance capabilities
of battery operated vehicles.

powered cars are developed and released into the marketplace. During
the transition, readers might also learn from the evolution of hybrid car
batteries.
